All is change
The thrifty find of a bag full of vintage angel making supplies inspired this assemblage project about change. The bag contained lots of vinyl heads and matching plastic arms in their original packaging labeled “Angels.” Some of them had their eyes closed, some had them open, and they all had a content and peaceful look on their faces. Based on their meditative expressions I made these art dolls to be allegories of insight and reflection.
To match the heads I crafted bodies from various vintage and found objects and added crochet and yarn-wrapping to soften their aluminum dresses. I collaged motivational sayings as mantras onto their skirts, and placed tokens of freedom, kindness, and transformation into their open hands. The legs can be posed to take on straight standing, balancing positions as in ballet or yoga.
The figure is attached to a wire at the shoulders so it can be displayed from a wall hook, a chandelier, or from the ceiling.
Mixed media assemblage: vintage vinyl doll head and plastic arms, used wooden blocks and dominos, vintage pastry molds, vintage skeleton keys, vintage glass and ceramic beads and pendants, felted wool, found bottle caps, wires, metal hardware, wood parts, cotton yarn, magazine and book clippings. Pieces measure 11” x 7” x 4”.
