Moon

This is a piece about togetherness, solidarity, and love.

I created the character “Moon” in 2021, in the middle of the pandemic nightmare and during a time when the world was all shook up in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. Against this backdrop, my father passed away, on the other side of the ocean. My husband and I attended his funeral virtually, sitting at our kitchen table, and dear friends and family members on both continents were dialed in, too.

We only saw their names on the screen but it was comforting to feel their presence somehow. Inspired by this extraordinary yet unlikely experience of connectedness, I wanted to reach out to all the other people in my life who I love and appreciate, friends who lived close by but who I had kept six feet apart from. I crafted over one hundred “Moon” figures and sent them, together with my poem “Drifting With a Destination,” on their postal journeys.

One of these envelopes went to an artist friend whose life suddenly ended in 2023. I made this framed collage piece “Moon” to honor and remember her and for everyone who needs to be found.

Mixed media assemblage: acrylics, discolored edges from book pages, book page from a vintage Whole Earth Catalog, various paper scraps, ink, watercolor, colored pencils, wire, in a hand-built box frame, 20” x 20” x 4”.

Fine art prints are available.
